Part-time Legal Research Attorney
The candidate assist with peaks in legal research workloads in the Court's Civil Division. Under direction, performs a wide range of complex legal research and analysis duties in assistance to judicial officers hearing all case types. Reviews and summarizes evidence, procedural history and legal contentions on matters before the court. Identifies and analyzes factual and legal issues relevant to the disposition of matters; researches legal authorities. Briefs judges on research and analysis pertaining to matters before the court, identifies and discusses unresolved issues necessary for the disposition of matters, and formulates dispositions. Responds to judges' inquires on procedural and substantive issues during trials and hearings; attends and assists at trials and hearings; conducts reviews of documents at the request of judges. Prepares pleadings, written legal reports, opinions, briefs, appeals and other legal documents in connection with trials, hearings and other legal proceedings. May serve as legal adviser to the court judicial officers, staff or judicial committees on specific matters before the court. May assist with the drafting of legislative measures and other legal work required by the court.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have graduated from an accredited law school. Should have active membership in the California State Bar for 4 years. Must have 2 years of experience performing legal research in general civil law in a superior or appellate court. Experience performing such work for California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) matters is highly desired. Should have knowledge of: legal principles and precedents as applied to judicial procedure; principles, methods, materials and practices of legal research including the use of legal reference works, case law and statutory law; trial procedure, rules of evidence, statutory and constitutional laws; and principles of civil, criminal, constitutional, and administrative law. Must have ability to: perform complex legal research; analyze difficult and complex legal problems and questions in the application of legal principles and procedures; present statements of fact and points of law clearly and logically both orally and in writing; prepare clear and comprehensive correspondence, reports, and memoranda; work independently with a minimum of supervision; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
