Assistant City Solicitor The candidate handles all stages of litigation arising from public sector employment law including discipline, grievance and arbitration matters and civil service hearings, as well as general municipal litigation including zoning board of appeals and special permit litigation; performs other duties as assigned for the purpose of an in-house municipal law department. Provides in-house counsel representation and legal support to Executive Office and Department Heads. Supports the City of Newton in a variety of ways such as litigation strategy and legal advice. Provides representation in federal and state courts and administrative agencies handling matters which include personal injury and other torts; employee discrimination; civil rights claims and contract disputes; land use litigation. Handles public and employee record requests and subpoenas. Advises the City on a myriad of areas impacting government entities including policy matters. Responds promptly and appropriately to requests for assistance on additional projects. Receptives to new ideas and responds to changing conditions and department needs. Reports directly to Deputy Solicitor. Must be familiar with and assist implementation of all city policies and procedures. Performs related work as required. Should have a Juris Doctorate degree. Massachusetts Bar Admission plus 3-7 years of experience in a law firm or governmental legal office. Should be licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with no disciplinary record. Should have highly motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal and communication skills. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office.
