Supervising Attorney - Juvenile Rights Practice Appeals The candidate will develop a training program on appellate practice and to supervise and mentor trial attorneys who seek to gain appellate experience including writing appellate briefs. Act as a liaison between the Appeals Unit and the trial offices to establish best practices to ready cases for appeal, and to spot common or novel issues that require strategies to address them. Lead dedicated and dynamic teams of attorneys, who represent the clients of the Juvenile Rights Appeals Unit. Directly mentor, train, and supervise staff to foster professional development and growth. Assist with monitoring the productivity of staff attorneys in all facets of Appeals representation, including record review, issue selection and appellate brief writing. Screen cases for potential issues to raise on appeal or in other post-disposition litigation. Review and revise briefs in preparation for filing. Carry a caseload consisting of direct appeals. Engage in strategic planning to increase the efficiency of JRP Appeals and ensure that clients continue to receive the highest quality representation. Consciously create and enhance a diverse workplace culture that is supportive, collaborative, and affirming to clients and colleagues.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate must have admission to the New York State Bar. Should preferably have 5+ years of demonstrated commitment to public defense, social and racial justice, and equity. Significant experience in all aspects of child welfare and youth justice post-disposition representation is required. Should have excellent research, writing, brief-writing, and oral argument skills. Must have comprehensive knowledge of relevant New York State and federal law including evidence laws, child welfare, criminal and constitutional laws, statutory interpretation, and ethical principles contained in the Rules of Professional Conduct. Should have extensive knowledge in both appellate practice and juvenile law and must demonstrate superior communication and organizational skills. Prior teaching experience is desirable.
