VP Counsel The candidate reports directly to the General Counsel and works collaboratively with many constituents across this industry-leading organization. Responsibilities: Provide legal advice on the full range of real estate and landlord/tenant issues. Provide legal support on ownership issues and field operations issues, including lease violations, LL/tenant issues, fair housing compliance, brokerage compliance, title & lien encumbrances, eviction/squatters/leasing fraud situations, and environmental issues (mold, radon, contamination abatement). Manage claims and disputes for the residential portfolio (e.g., habitability, HUD, FHA, title, vendor); manage outside counsel where utilized and coach personnel on dispute resolution as appropriate. Advise on commercial contract risks; support or lead contract negotiations as appropriate. Develop and maintain legally compliant residential lease templates. Develop, maintain and improve legal tools and resources for residential operations, contract management, and claims management. Develop and deliver efficient and effective legal compliance training for operations personnel. Assist in developing and maintaining policies, procedures for rental operations. Monitor developments in applicable LL/tenant and real estate laws. Provide legal advice on the management of HOA risks and exercises of voting power. Assist GC as needed on strategic and department projects. Qualifications: Attorney with 7+ years of real estate related experience, with 5 years at a major law firm preferred. Experience providing legal support to single-family or multifamily residential clients preferred. Previous property management or multifamily residential rental experience preferred. Office lease experience is a plus. Experience managing other attorneys and support staff is a plus. Experience advising and working with executives and a wide range of employees.
