Administrative Assistant (Paralegal)
RESPONSIBILITIES: Under limited supervision, will provide assistance to attorneys assigned to a county office to provide legal services and representation in Family Courts on issues relative to child protection, foster care, adoption, child day care, and adult protection. Utilize the Legal Case Management System (LCMS) to prepare pleadings, orders, notices, and other documents. Maintain accurate LCMS data by inputting documents and information including names of parties, addresses, and hearing outcomes. Prepare cases for Family Court including file organization, initiation and verification of service and ensure all parties are properly served, distribution of treatment plans, preparation and distribution of dockets to appropriate parties, draft proposed orders for attorney review, process continuance requests, and re-docket subsequent hearings. Prepare pleadings, motions, and proposed orders for attorney's review; file pleadings, motions, notices, and other legal documents with the Clerk of Court; circulate, file, and serve orders. Attend hearings and trials, assist with the orderly flow of cases into the courtroom, and maintain accurate notes reflecting attendance, testimony, evidence, and the Court's ruling. Collect, assemble and verify witness statements, reports, documents and exhibits for use by attorney in preparation of court cases. Research issues, prepare briefs, discovery requests, and motions. Act as liaison between the attorney and DSS staff members, and representatives of law enforcement and Family Court.

Qualification and Experience

REQUIREMENTS: A High School diploma and 4 years of responsible clerical or administrative experience. An Associate's Degree and 2 years of responsible clerical or administrative experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience as approved by the Division of State Human Resources. Knowledge of legal terminology, ability to express conclusions & arguments clearly and logically, ability to independently act to obtain, organize & analyze information needed or used in representing clients.
