Vice President of Legal / General Counsel Responsibilities: Manages, directs, supervises, coordinates, and performs general operational-related legal services for the company. Acts as a key strategic legal advisor, counselor, and business partner to the senior leadership team. Oversight, supervision and reporting responsibility for the Legal Department's staff, whose primary role is the performance of legal services and support for the company. Actively leads the Legal Department and is engaged in the planning, management, administration, direction and decision-making of the department. Collaborates to provide leadership, knowledge, expertise and independent oversight in legal, risk, and quality management for the company. Oversees the company Hotline program to support investigative process and to identify systemic issues for referral to the senior leadership team and Board of Directors. Reviews policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal requirements and company policies. Provides implementation assistance as needed to ensure consistency within company facilities. Provides legal support for company facilities in internal and external survey and certification matters including ensuring that any corrective action plan is fully implemented and that policies and procedures are followed. Maintains active and ongoing relationships with field service team members to provide operational support. Monitors changes in law and regulation that require modification of policies, procedures or practices; develop implementation strategy around needed changes. Retains and oversees use of outside counsel for regulatory issues within budget. Identifies emerging issues, risk areas and barriers to compliance and recommends strategies to mitigate risk and remove barriers. Maintains a deep understanding of all relevant health related laws and proactively engages in developing mitigation strategies as issues arise.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Juris Doctor (JD) A Juris Doctor or equivalent degree from an accredited law school in the United States. Should have 10+ years’ experience involving the provision and management of legal services for health systems, hospitals, long-term care, and/or other health care delivery organizations, with an emphasis on long-term care operations, compliance, healthcare-related transactions, and other similar matters. 5 years’ experience in a senior or management level position in an in-house legal department or law firm, such as general counsel, managing partner, associate/assistant general counsel, senior counsel/client service leader, practice group or department leader, or equivalent leadership role. Current license to practice law in Indiana.
