Public Defender Paralegal
The candidate will provides pre-trial, trial and post-trial case preparation assistance of a substantive and technical nature under the direction of an attorney. Collects, analyzes, organizes, investigates, and summarizes discovery or other materials. Assists attorneys with preparation for various types of legal proceedings including but not limited to creating trial notebooks, witness files, trial exhibits, and charts/indices. Develops and secures discovery, evidence, and other documentation. Performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which an attorney is responsible. Assists attorneys in the development of defense strategies and case theories. Assists attorneys in jury selection and trial proceedings. Maintains contact with clients (in and out of custody), clients' families, or other pertinent individuals regarding legal process, case status, and/or other related information. Gathers, reviews, and verifies case documentation including making recommendations for further analysis. Researches and retains expert witnesses, provides recommendations on experts based on case facts. Interviews witnesses regarding facts as needed in defense of cases; Interacts with attorneys, management, co-workers, other agencies, and interested parties. Prepares routine to moderately complex legal or other documents. Utilizes technological software to aid in file management, case synopsis and presentations in courtroom proceedings. Performs work in a high volume, fast-paced, stressful environment. Maintains current knowledge of statutes, case law and legal procedures to ensure compliance with court procedures. Researches legal or factual issues and provides findings to attorneys. Maintains case files and case logs. Applies knowledge of statutes, case law and legal procedures to ensure compliance with court procedures; Attends legal seminars, training classes and position-oriented meetings on- and off-site.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate must have a Bachelor's degree in paralegal or legal assisting studies program. OR Must have a Bachelor's degree in any field plus a certificate from a paralegal or legal assisting studies program. OR Must have Associate's degree in paralegal or legal assisting studies with 2+ year’s paralegal experience. OR Must have Associate's degree in paralegal or legal assisting studies and NALA certification. OR Must have Associate's degree in any field and certificate of completion from a paralegal or legal assisting program with 2+ year’s paralegal experience. Must have knowledge of: Legal terminology, principles, precedents, procedures, and research methods; Arizona laws, Rules of Evidence, and the Code of Professional Responsibility. Must have ability to: Plan, organize, and effectively present ideas and concepts to others; Assimilate information from a variety of sources, analyze information, and make or recommend accurate courses of action; Establish and maintain effective working relationships; Communicate effectively, orally and in writing; Adapt and learn as technology advances; Interact tactfully with clients, their family, attorneys, and other professionals; Perform duties under critical deadlines. Must have certificate of completion from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal or legal assisting program.
