Assistant General Counsel Duties: Serve Ministry by applying our diverse talents and perspectives to provide mission-based, strategic guidance to further collective stewardship of the ministry’s resources. Act as lead counsel for one or more subject matter areas of expertise on behalf of Mercy Health, including clinical research, medical staff matters, peer review and GME and related clinical matters. Provide strategic / operational and legal services for assigned Market / other Entity, including the Chief Clinical Officers, Research Department and Quality Departments. Provide strategic input and support to Mercy Health leaders and Market senior leaders, including the Chief Medical Officer of Research and Innovation, Chief Quality Officer, and System Medical Director of Provider Development. Provide tools and support for effective policies and contractual arrangements. Accountabilities include:. Streamline process and provide timely service. Adherence to laws and regulations. Understand and support business strategies, objectives and decision-making. Work effectively with other Mercy Health Law firm members, support services, operational and clinical teams, and provide excellent customer service. Provide input and execution in support of main transactions and system initiatives. Accountabilities include:. Balance legal risk with business objectives. Understand business and community needs assessments. Fulfill expectations set forth in transaction work plans. Perform or arrange for provision of all legal work by other Mercy Health law firm members and work effectively with transaction team to provide excellent customer service. Provide day-to-day counsel. Accountabilities include:. Provide tools and resources for day-to-day needs. Provide expertise as called upon. Keep up with ever-changing regulatory environment, and communicate any major changes. Provide education and training. Build relationships of trust in the Markets. Provide advice on assigned subject matter issues. Triage legal and compliance requests to most relevant expert Respond to concerns of patients or other external parties (i.e. OIG). Provide guidance on how to structure projects in a compliant way. Provide strategic / operational / design and legal services to assist with Clinical Research work being compliant with laws and regulations. Provide strategic / operational / design and legal services to support standardization of medical staff processes.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD Degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school. Registered Nursing or other clinical degree preferred. Must be licensed to practice law in the state of Ohio or another state. 4+ years of healthcare law and extensive experience in a subject matter area of expertise, including working knowledge in areas of subject matter expertise. Exceptional organizational skills, including the ability to organize and maintain files, manage diverse assignments and projects, exercise judgment and decision making in prioritization of multiple deadlines. Dynamic, self-starter with strong negotiating skills. Strong business acumen and understanding of healthcare environment. Ability to work independently. Ability to adhere to deadlines and work on multiple, simultaneous assignments. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to address multiple priorities in a fast paced, dynamic environment. Ability to relate well with others at various levels and ability to educate and train others. Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Excellent analytical and problem solving abilities. Commitment to Mercy Health Mission and Values; Ability to represent Market/Entity and the Home Office Departments while simultaneously protecting the interests of Mercy Health and the System as a whole; Willingness to take on new projects and commitments; and willingness to take on ownership of subject matter area of expertise for the system. General understanding of healthcare related statues and their regulations, interpretations, court cases, and regulatory and other governmental analysis (including the Stark Law, Fraud and Abuse / Anti Kickback Prohibitions, Tax Exemption Principals and Intermediate Sanctions).
