Assistant Attorney General III-V The candidate performs routine to complex attorney work for the General Litigation Division of the Office of the Attorney General. Work involves directing, planning, organizing and monitoring legal activities; providing legal advice, counsel, and assistance to state agencies as assigned; conducting investigations; researching and drafting legal documents; representing the State’s civil matters in state and federal courts; preparing cases for trial, and handling matters through all litigation stages, including in many instances the appellate process. Represents state agencies and its officials in defense of lawsuits involving, but not limited to, civil rights (U.S. and Texas Constitution, Title VII, Sec. 1983 etc.), retaliation, employment, constitutionality of state statutes, Americans with Disabilities Act, etc., in both state and federal court. Conducts investigations, performs legal research, and prepares complex motions, including pleadings, briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents. Prepares and tries cases in state and federal courts in defense of state agencies and state employees. Provides legal advice, counsel and assistance to state agencies as assigned; performs analyses of complex factual and legal issues and develops evidence through witness interviews, depositions, and other discovery; prepares and files briefs in state and federal appellate courts. Provides excellent client service and functions well with other attorneys and staff within a dynamic office environment. Maintains relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions. Attends work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule. Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information. Complies with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications:
For Assistant Attorney General III: Must have graduation from an accredited law school with a JD and member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. Should have 1+ year of full-time experience working in the following (or closely related) fields as a licensed attorney: Civil Litigation. Experience: State and federal court trial experience is required. Knowledge of laws and legal principles and practices relevant to the General Litigation Division is needed. Skill in legal research and negotiations is must. Skill in using a computer for word-processing and data entry/retrieval is essential.

For Assistant Attorney General IV: Must have graduation from an accredited law school with a JD and member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. Should have 3+ year of full-time experience working in the following (or closely related) fields as a licensed attorney: Civil Litigation. Experience: State and federal court trial experience is required. Knowledge of laws and legal principles and practices relevant to the General Litigation Division is needed. Skill in legal research and negotiations is must. Skill in using a computer for word-processing and data entry/retrieval is essential.

For Assistant Attorney General V: Must have graduation from an accredited law school with a JD and member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. Should have 4+ year of full-time experience working in the following (or closely related) fields as a licensed attorney: Civil Litigation. Experience: State and federal court trial experience is required. Knowledge of laws and legal principles and practices relevant to the General Litigation Division is needed. Skill in legal research and negotiations is must. Skill in using a computer for word-processing and data entry/retrieval is essential.

Preferred qualifications: Exceptional academic credentials; Law Review and/or post-graduation judicial clerkship Law Review and/or post-graduation judicial clerkship; Tried two jury trials to a verdict in state and/or federal district court; 5+ years’ litigation experience in the following areas of law: civil rights, constitutional law, employment law, education and health care law. Experience in the area of federal Medicaid law.
