Legal Supervisor The candidate will be responsible for supervising at least one professional, i.e., a paralegal, and provide legal representation and immigration legal service counseling to non-detained and detained immigrants, including immigrant children, who are appearing before the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Will also recruits, trains and provides technical support to pro bono counsel assigned to firm's cases. Engage with local and regional stakeholders and identify advocacy issues and present emerging issues or trends to firm's advocacy and litigation teams. Supervise team, develop goals for each team member; measure progress; and conduct annual performance evaluations. Gather and analyze data and trends and recommend changes in policies and in firm's priorities. Review models and opportunities for growth; identify new initiatives. Create systems to improve project objectives. Identify strategies to highlight firm's work. Contribute to firm's overall strategic plan. Collaborate with other programs within firm's (such as development and communications).Oversee and coordinate with firm's COO on matters related to local space, equipment, supplies, etc. Provide legal services, including intake, counseling, research, case acceptance and legal representation. Make assessment of income eligibility and makes appropriate referrals for those individuals not eligible for organization services. Recommend exceptions to financial guidelines to the supervisor.Identify and prepare cases for pro bono representation. Conduct client advocacy, presenting evidence, etc. in accord with the Code of Professional Responsibility for the legal profession. Remain current on immigration law, policies and procedures. Remain current on implications of criminal and civil law as it applies to the representation of immigrants. Develop and maintain professional relationships with EOIR, DHS, U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS), government and social service organizations and community organizations as necessary. Interprets immigration and department policies and programs to the public, including public speaking. In accord with the ethical standards required of the legal profession, the Code of Professional Responsibility, preserve client confidentiality, account for client monies and avoid conflict of interest. Adhere to professional standards as outlined by governmental bodies, (and/or other appropriate professional associations), private funding sources, organization plans/policies and guidelines. Participate in periodic evaluative reviews and/or in-house and external staff training to ensure that she/he understands and continues to adhere to such standards. Initiate requests for assistance or guidance from supervisor to address new issues or complex concepts affecting adherence to professional standards. Maintain complete and accurate client records. Prepare timely reports. Conduct quarterly case audits for presentation and review by the supervisor. Other duties may be assigned. Contribute to proposals and reports; participate in funder meetings. Develop allies (elected officials, community organizations, funders. Develop materials and trainings for community based organizations, pro bono attorneys, funders, other stakeholders. Identify client case stories for use in publications, funder reports, etc. Recruit, train, and manage pro bono support for cases in satellite office in conjunction with pro bono manager.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have Juris Doctorate Degree and 3+ years of practicing law with a preference in immigration and/or human rights law. At least one year of supervision or senior attorney experience is required. High energy and strong organizational skills are required. High proficiency or fluency in Spanish required.
