ProfileStaff Attorney, Consumer Protection Unit Duties: Will be partly situated in the Personal Appearance Part of Bronx, Queens and/or Richmond County Civil Courts to provide direct oversight of attorneys and law students serving as volunteers in the Court for the Consumer Debt Volunteer Lawyer for the Day Project (VLFD). Will be reviewing stipulations negotiated by the volunteer lawyer and the adversary counsel in appropriate cases, as well as answers, orders to show cause, papers related to dispositive and other motions, brief affidavits and discovery demands prepared by the self-represented litigant and/or the volunteer lawyers; answering the substantive legal questions of volunteer lawyers; evaluating and giving feedback on the quality of the volunteer lawyers’ services; and representing a self-represented litigant on a limited appearance basis for a day, when the volunteer lawyer assigned to said litigant is unable to come in on his/her volunteer date. Will also respond to the telephone inquiries of the volunteer lawyers as necessary and perform the intake of self-represented litigants and prepare an answer or amended answer on a limited basis. Will work closely with the Bronx, Queens and Richmond County CLARO program, as well as local bar associations’ pro bono programs. Some administrative work and other relevant work is expected outside of Court time. When not working on the Project, will be to staff other intake sites if needed, handle cases, conduct research and intakes, fulfill grant deliverables as needed, and conduct educational workshops through various consumer protection projects. Will provide legal services and legal representation for clients experiencing many forms of debt including student loan, medical, and credit card, through a project in collaboration with the Department of Consumer Affairs; provide consumer protection assistance through other programs and may provide other consumer legal services, described below, depending on funding.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Admitted (NY) attorney with a demonstrated commitment to public interest law. Must have excellent communication, multitasking, collaborative, research, and writing skills. Must be hard working, able to meet deadlines and work in a team and take constructive feedback well. Experience handling bankruptcy, foreclosure prevention, and consumer law will have priority, as well as those with prior litigation experience. Must be willing to staff intake sites and take cases throughout all of the boroughs and outlying areas – including Westchester and Long Island. Admission to the New York Bar required. Preference will also be given to those applicants with bilingual ability in Spanish.
