Senior Supervising Staff Attorney - Immigrant Detention The candidate will lead the Center's 'crimmigration' docket. Will supervise a dedicated team of staff attorneys and support staff. Responsible for developing and litigating impact cases raising constitutional and statutory claims in federal courts, at trial and appellate levels. Engage in litigation and public advocacy related to civil rights issues, particularly relating to the intersection of the criminal justice and immigrant enforcement systems. This work may include: combatting increased federal prosecutions of immigration-related crimes; combatting local law enforcement abuses, including racial profiling of immigrants or those suspected to be immigrants; and ensuring immigrant detainees have access to counsel, due process protections, and constitutional conditions of confinement. Lead the development and implementation of Center's crimmigration docket throughout the South. Develop new cases and campaigns and lead litigation and public advocacy. Supervise and manage the work of Senior Staff Attorneys, Staff Attorneys, Law Fellows, and other legal staff. Collaborate with the Deputy Legal Director and the Communications Department to develop communication strategies around cases and campaigns, and serve as spokesperson upon request. Supervise outreach activities related to cases and campaigns. Communicate regularly with Center staff across the southern region about cases, campaigns, and strategies. Represent Center in various fora, including before community groups, legislatures, and state agencies, and the press.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have a J.D. degree. Must have 7+ years of federal court civil litigation or comparable legal experience with 2+ years of managerial experience of legal staff to include hiring, training, performance evaluation, mentoring, etc. Demonstrated commitment to diversity is required. Demonstrated leadership in building and maintaining an innovative and positive working culture is needed. Excellent research and writing skills are essential. Must have admission to a Bar and willingness to sit for an additional Bar examination if necessary, depending on location. Spanish language ability preferred.
