Crime Victims Staff Attorney

Crime Victim’s Staff Attorneys are expected to fulfill the mission of Texas Legal Services Center by drafting and revising legal documents, advising clients as to legal rights, and providing legal services, including legal representation, advice, and information by telephone and in-person, and educating the public about crime victims’ rights. Crime Victim’s Staff Attorneys are responsible for answering hotline calls, managing her/his caseload, making relevant referrals to partner agencies and coordinating various program activities.

Requirements

J.D. Degree and licensure by the Supreme Court of Texas with three (3) years of relevant work experience in Texas. The requirement of at least 3 years of licensure can be waived in instances in which the candidate demonstrates a superior ability to apply the law pertaining to crime victims. The Staff Attorney must have training and/or experience in working with victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Candidate should show a demonstrated commitment to public interest law and social justice advocacy and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Spanish-speaker and experience working with crime victims preferred.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Dress appropriately for the position, and maintain the highest degree of professionalism.

Execute intake interviews, confirm eligibility for services and check for conflicts of interest.

Analyze legal problems, and conduct legal research and factual investigation as needed to perform the tasks undertaken on behalf of eligible clients.

Communicate with third parties on behalf of clients to resolve legal problems and make referrals.

Work with clients in a culturally sensitive, trauma-informed and victim-centered manner.

Manage clients in crisis situations by responding promptly to their needs and soliciting their feedback to improve services.

Maintain the highest ethical and professional standards as a member of the State Bar and stay current with updates and changes to the law.

Ensure that all appointments and deadlines are calendared and timely executed with sufficient time dedicated for management approval of legal documents.

Adhere to the ABA Standards for Civil Legal Services Providers.

Cultivate working relationships, both internally and with other social services agencies in the community, to advance program and organizational goals.

Comply with all regulations, grant requirements, and internal operating and personnel policies.

Promptly provide all information needed/requested for TLSC-reporting.

Ensure all client, project, and computer files are maintained in an orderly manner.

Demonstrate proficiency with TLSC’s case management system, Adobe and Microsoft Office products, and social media tools and the ability to learn new technologies to carry out job functions.

Embrace and support TLSC’s overall mission, standards, policies, and confidentiality requirements.

Maintain the highest level of professionalism.

Perform other duties as assigned by Senior Management and/or the Crime Victims Managing Attorney.

Extended hours of work depending on business needs and special requests made by Senior Management, or Managing Attorney.

Ability to type with speed and accuracy and to use office software and case management systems.


Programmatic Requirements and Duties

The Crime Victims Staff Attorney is responsible for the direct services component of the program, including but not limited to:

Demonstrate knowledge and expertise in the law and legal system, especially in areas that impact crime victims.

Assist, lead, and promote education efforts statewide and in local programs, including participation in various pieces of training aimed at law enforcement, attorneys, judges, and other social service providers.

Work with Managing Attorney to correct any legal or intake problems.

Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include training, planning, assigning and directing the work of others (volunteers, interns, intake staff and paralegals).

Travel required.
