Profile

Litigation Paralegal Duties: Perform high-quality billable work for the benefit of our clients and the support of our attorneys. Provide a high level of expertise in assisting clients and attorneys while managing a busy case and/or matter load. Paralegals are generally expected to record 1500+ recorded billable hours during the performance year. Performs, under the direction and supervision of an attorney, substantive legal support work which, for the most part, requires a sufficient knowledge of legal concepts such that, absent the paralegal, the work would be performed by an attorney. Uses expertise and knowledge of the legal system and substantive and procedural law to perform the substantive legal support work under the supervision of an attorney; the paralegal must confer with and follow the direction of an attorney on any legal decision. Accurately enter time on a daily basis to ensure that both billable and non-billable time is captured. Maintain knowledge of client-specific billing guidelines and restrictions and consistently applies those guidelines to ensure cost-effective practices. Schedules and conducts team meetings at appropriate intervals on all assigned litigation files. Demonstrated effectiveness at obtaining and managing client documents, including electronic data, and determining potential existence of documents that may be relevant to each case. Regularly conduct litigation, criminal, and civil background checks and obtains properly authenticated records as needed. Effectively and regularly drafts for attorney review: removal documents, certificates of interested parties, answers, initial disclosures, various motions and orders, scheduling orders, protective orders, deposition notices, affidavits and declarations, discovery and our responses to discovery, settlement agreements, dismissal documents for attorney review, etc. Assists with preparation of motions for summary judgment; checking deposition cites, assembling exhibits, and creating the appendix. Prepares accurate budget estimates and case status reports for attorney review. Regularly prepares key document notebooks, motion notebooks, master chronologies, master cast of characters, deposition notebooks and identification of deposition exhibits. Regularly and timely prepares FOIA requests, subpoenas for third party records and obtains appropriate records. Consistently and accurately identify and prepare all documents for production including bates labeling and redacting for privileged and confidential information. Coordinates docketing with secretaries and maintains Case Deadline form for each litigation file. Effectively assists in preparation for trial including managing exhibits and all evidentiary matters, witness lists, files and subpoenas, coordinates and attends witness prep meetings; assists at trial. Conducts online research and able to utilize the firm’s electronic resources efficiently and effectively. Accurately unitizes and scans or ensures that all client, third-party, and opposing party documents are properly entered into e-Discovery tools. Actively performs subjective coding and assists others with coding. Regularly seeks training and knowledge to improve efficient and cost-effective methods of managing litigation case files. Assists with and/or files court documents both electronically and in document form and able to determine and follow any local or judge specific requirements related to same. Regularly and accurately proofreads all documents to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to submitting to attorneys for review. Routinely reviews and follows-up on client deadlines. Regularly assists in developing and maintaining court, district, local, state and federal docketing rules and forms as well as pleading forms, discovery forms, form objections, etc. Routinely prepares and maintains a Litigation Checklist for active litigation. Routinely prepares document retention/e-discovery letters for attorney review. Consistently reviews Courthouse News Reports and submits daily email identifying lawsuits filed in multiple jurisdictions. Properly prioritizes work assignments. Seeks appropriate assistance (from the office manager or attorneys) when conflicts arise. Consistently completes assigned tasks when expected. Able to juggle multiple assignments and/or deadlines while maintaining a professional demeanor and timely seeks assistance when needed. Willing and capable to offer assistance to others when needed. Reviews and ensures accuracy of vendor invoices; timely submits invoices to office manager for processing.
