STAFF ATTORNEY: For assignment to the Welfare Unit, which provides legal advice and representation in matters related to Public Assistance, Medicaid and Food Stamps. In addition, the position will include responsibilities of a telephone hotline and legal education program designed to provide technical assistance to clients so that they can handle their own legal problems.
DUTIES: Representation of eligible clients in administrative hearings and before the courts. Provide advice and advocacy services via telephone. Provide community education through clinics, workshops and trainings to clients and lay advocates. The staff attorney will be required to maintain case records in the office's computerized case management system.
Nassau/Suffolk Law Services is a non-profit organization providing free legal services to low-income and moderate income households.
START DATE: IMMEDIATELY
SALARY: $52,458 DOE
Requirements: Admission to New York State Bar. Applicants who have passed the Bar Examination and are pending admission will also be considered. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English preferred. Applicants who have taken the exam and are waiting to hear the results may be considered. Demonstrated commitment to goals and clients of the legal services program.
