Counsel, Music The candidate will work in the company’s Music Group, which is part of the Business & Legal Affairs Team based. Responsible for all of global music business and strategy, from the production and licensing of Originals to the administration of repertoire of music and through to the distribution of the service globally. This exciting role focuses on the production side and will be responsible for structuring, negotiating and drafting agreements with the composers, songwriters, artists and performers who create music for Original film, series and documentary content and with the record companies and music publishers who license music. He or she will handle music contract and copyright related matters as they arise, will likely need to dig into local law and practice in various International territories, and should be extremely comfortable working independently, counseling business partners and making decisions that have both legal and business impacts. Will maintain organization and focus that fuels his/her effectiveness in successfully juggling multiple projects.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate must have: 8+ years of film/series production music experience, including immersion in structuring, negotiating and drafting composer, performer and featured artist agreements, master use and synchronization license agreements, music producer agreements, record company and music publishing waivers and soundtrack album agreements; in-depth knowledge of music copyright and the film/series production process - from script to budget to music clearance/licensing to composer engagement/recording through to delivery, cue sheets, music publishing administration and launch; practical knowledge of the music and technology industries (including active relationships with music agents, managers, music publishers, record companies and music libraries); and understanding of the evolving theatrical, VOD, TV, syndication and home video landscapes. International market experience and international production experience is a plus. Experience providing in-house support in a film or television production company is highly preferred. Clear, concise communication skills. Strong analytical capabilities and judgment, even when the rules are unclear and the issues are of first impression. Ability to work proactively, independently and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast-paced production environment. Ability to pivot quickly and fluidly, think practically and be solution-oriented. Curiosity and willingness to tackle matters outside area of expertise. Music production experience enables you to handle any situation or crisis that may be encountered on a production. Expertly navigate those situations to arrive at the best solution for the production and the studio. Understand the dynamics among showrunners, executive producers, line producers, producers, finance, production, post production, credits, labor, marketing, publicity, content localization, business affairs and legal affairs and know when and how to engage and align the appropriate teams when a music issue calls. Comfortable evaluating risk and have the confidence to make quick decisions when faced with the exigencies of production.
