Paralegal II The candidate will draft clear and articulate documents to include legal pleadings, correspondence to attorneys and clerks of court; memoranda detailing research results; statements of fact for appellate briefs; summarize trial transcripts. Will serve in Legal/Consumer Protection Division. Assist attorneys with editing and finalizing legal documents, including briefs; conduct cite checks for legal memoranda and appellate briefs; consult with attorneys about the factual issues and interview the witnesses to prepare a detailed, accurate, coherent and concise affidavit; will consult with the witness and the attorney and amend the affidavit as necessary. Pleads, motions, memoranda and appellate briefs in all North Carolina state and federal courts and administrative agencies by hand delivery, United States mail, private courier and electronic filing as appropriate; will utilize filing systems and procedures for lawsuits. Assist the attorney developing appropriate responses, discovery, and demands; will review documents to identify potentially privileged correspondence, and will electronically store and organize the documents; will also prepare privilege logs when necessary; will draft discovery requests independently, and/or after consultation with the attorney and investigative staff. Assist attorneys in preparing for trials and hearings; will organize exhibits for depositions, hearings, briefs, etc. and will prepare indices, notebooks and/or appendices to include organizing, cataloging and analyzing these materials.. Electronically reproduce, store, and organize documents; transmit electronically stored documents opposing parties or courts and prepare the electronically stored documents for presentation at hearings. Contact and schedule witnesses to appear and testify in court, will attend trials, hearings and depositions as needed. Must be a trained professional paralegal knowledgeable and skilled in legal research and various court rules. Prior knowledge of word processing, on-line legal research, and database management is desired. Working knowledge of case, statutory, and common law is needed. Working knowledge of judicial and quasi-judicial procedures and the rules of evidence is needed. Ability to perform legal research in accordance with preliminary instructions as to methods or approach, source material available, and policy and precedent of the office is needed.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate must have graduation from an accredited school for paralegal training and 2 years of experience as a paralegal or graduation from a four-year college/university with a degree in English, journalism, or a degree directly related to the area assigned and 2 years of substantive paralegal experience; or graduation from high school and six years of paralegal experience performing delegated, substantive legal work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. An associates degree and a paralegal certificate and substantial experience in complex litigation, preferably civil is needed. Management also prefers candidate with demonstrated proficiency in the use of litigation software is needed.
