Assistant City Attorney I - Criminal Division Duties: The candidate will prepare and handle arraignments, pre-trials, trials and other appearances on petty misdemeanor, misdemeanor, and gross misdemeanor cases. Will draft and prepare criminal complaints, prepare written motions, memoranda and appellate briefs. Work with investigators, victim/witness assistants, and paralegals to prepare cases for trial. Argue motions, appellate issues, and cases at trial. Respond to inquiries from law enforcement, criminal justice partners, and members of the public. Conduct legal research related to criminal law issues as required. Advise law enforcement personnel and City departments. Prepare appeals of district court decisions. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualification and Experience

Qualification and Experience: The candidate should have Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school. Must be Licensed to practice law in the State of Minnesota at time of hire and throughout employment with the City Attorney's Office. Should have thorough understanding of criminal law, the rules of criminal procedure, and the rules of evidence is essential. Knowledge of local ordinances, state laws, established precedents and sources of legal reference is essential. Knowledge of and the ability to use on-line legal resources such as Westlaw is essential. Good oral and written communication skill is essential. Experience in representing a public entity as a lawyer or student attorney is considered. Contributor to, or editor of, a law review or law journal is desirable. Jury or court trial experience, particularly in criminal cases is desirable. Experience in a judicial clerkship is desirable. Experience in researching and drafting legal memoranda and/or motions is desirable. Excellent writing skill is desirable. Fluency in a foreign language (e.g. those used by the City's immigrant and refugee population such as Hmong, Lao, Oromo, Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese) is desirable.
