Resident Attorney III Responsibilities: Responsible for the accomplishment of the office, department and corporate goals. Sets goals that are in accordance with Corporate and Legal Department goals. Directs staff in the accomplishment of the goals. Conducts performance appraisals, reviews staff attorney's work for quality and quantity and takes appropriate action to correct deficiencies. Recruits, hires and trains new staff. Reviews incoming cases and assigns to outside counsel or attorneys in staff office as appropriate. Audits selected case files to insure proper case handling and adherence to company policy and applicable legislation. Act as principal legal advisor for all departments at the office. Meets with claims and/or policyholders to discuss general policy and litigation prevention matters. Serves as chief trial attorney on selected liability cases. Stay abreast of developments in the law generally. Confer with and write to insureds during the pendency of the litigation. Understands and creatively uses technology; applies technology to the process of law to improve quality and reduce cost. Keep leadership within the Legal Department advised as to work needs and any problems with the office and its personnel.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Must have 10 years of experience handling insurance defense litigation, including automobile, premises liability, NY No-Fault and Special Investigation cases. Trial experience is required, either as first chair in insurance defense cases or primary litigator in complex high exposure workers compensation cases. Completion of law school with LLB or JD plus admission to the New York Bar. Demonstrated management ability is vital. An understanding for the needs of Claims Department and other departments is necessary but must be compromised where legal ethics and law so require. The ability to persuade by printed or spoken word is essential.
