ProfileTemporary Senior Legal Counsel The candidate will provide the Tribe with a full range of legal services, including litigation, transactional work and legal advice. Will represent the Tribe in administrative proceedings and litigation in federal and state courts. Negotiate, prepare and review contracts, intergovernmental agreements and other transactional documents. Manage complex legal issues, including litigation. Present and explain key policy issues regarding legal issues to the Tribal Council and Committees. Keep abreast of new laws, cases and legal challenges that may affect pending or future legal matters. Cooperate with tribal, state and federal officials in prevention and adjudication of cases while upholding tribal sovereignty. Conduct research, write documents, file legal documents in the appropriate court, and present oral arguments in court. Review and evaluate Tribal guidelines, internal controls, and policies, and make recommendations concerning same to the Tribal Council. Assist in developing and improving the Tribe's code of laws including code development. Attend legal seminars, tribal trainings, and meetings as appropriate and necessary to serve the Tribe's interest. Develop and maintain cooperative and collaborative working relationships with Tribal staff.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should be a graduate from an ABA accredited law school in the US. Must have 8+ years of experience as a lawyer in the field of Federal Indian law with an emphasis on representation of Indian tribes. Current license to practice law in the State of Washington as a member of the Washington State Bar Association is required. Attorneys who are not members of the WSBA or eligible to obtain membership through reciprocity must pass the Washington State Bar within six months from date of hire. Should be a member of the Washington State Bar in good standing. Knowledge of the culture and traditions of the Tribe or other Tribes with similar culture and traditions is required. Knowledge of, and experience in, complex civil litigation is essential. Experience in drafting tribal codes is a must.
