Investigative Support Specialist (Sample Control), GS 7 - 11 Duties : Serve as a Sample Controller for the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory (USACIL), an organization providing world-wide laboratory support to investigative agencies of the Department of Defense (DoD) and other federal and non-federal agencies. Manages the CODIS Branch offender DNA sample repository. Serve as an expert on sample inspection, analyses, determination and submission. Receiving and evaluating unique and often irreplaceable samples that are used in court proceedings and are subject to chain of custody attack. Performing technical and administrative functions and use judgment and discretion as necessary for successful unit mission accomplishment. Serve as an expert on sample submissions and sample processing. Receive, evaluate and process unique DNA samples to forensic standards using judgment, discretion and critical thinking skills. Work in a laboratory, following safety procedures. Prepare samples for DNA analysis. Conduct routine decontamination and performance check procedures on critical laboratory equipment. Prepare critical instruments for use by scientific staff. Control access and stores samples to prevent loss. Enter sample information into a database. Use sample tracking software and MS Office programs, among others. Manage the DNA collection kit distribution program. Process court orders Conduct NCIC searches and interprets reports. Maintain the web portal. ?Maintain budget information. Work with customers to resolve issues. Communicate orally and in writing with many customers. Advise customers on submission requirements. Manage equipment and supply maintenance program and contracts.

Qualification and Experience

Qualification : GS-07: Must have 1+ year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Work that involves attention to detail and using automated systems in a laboratory environment and performing laboratory support functions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

GS-09: Must have 1+ year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Work that involves attention to detail, using automated systems, handling unique biological samples in a laboratory environment and performing laboratory support functions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

GS-11: Must have 1+ year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Work that involves attention to detail, using automated systems, accessioning DNA samples into a sample tracking system, experience using judgment and discretion to independently evaluate submission acceptance, experience working with customers to resolve complex issues, experience working with criminal history databases; experience producing reports and analyzing trends in data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05, GS-07, GS-09).
