A law firm seeks an Associate Attorney for its fast-paced practice specializing in debt collection and creditor's rights, located in downtown Milwaukee, WI. This role offers an opportunity to represent clients in various civil cases, particularly in debt collection matters. The ideal candidate will have experience or interest in creditors' rights law, with a strong emphasis on small claims, civil litigation, and post-judgment procedures. The firm fosters a collaborative environment with a strong support team of paralegals and administrative staff.

Duties:

  • Represent clients in Wisconsin small claims and civil courts, including initial appearances, pre-trial conferences, motions, scheduling conferences, hearings, and trials.
  • Coordinate with co-counsel and manage litigation tasks in collaboration with the legal team.
  • Oversee due diligence and placement reviews for cases.
  • Monitor and track all appearance dates and deadlines for motions/discovery.
  • Prepare, write, and file motions, briefs, memoranda, orders, and correspondence.
  • Handle discovery requests, both making and responding to them.
  • Engage in settlement negotiations with attorneys and pro se litigants.
  • Maintain communication with clients to keep them informed of case progress.
  • Collaborate closely with paralegals and administrative assistants to streamline case management and ensure efficiency.
  • Follow up on pre- and post-judgment litigation activities.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge or prior experience in creditors' rights law and debt collection.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
  • Comfortable working with legal software and technology platforms to manage case files and deadlines.
  • Familiarity with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), Wisconsin Consumer Act, Bankruptcy Chapters 7 & 13, and Wisconsin Section 128 proceedings.
  • Previous court experience, including motion practice and trial preparation, is preferred.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills.
  • Must be admitted to the Wisconsin State Bar.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (.) from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Must be admitted to practice law in the State of Wisconsin.

  • Expertise in civil litigation, particularly in debt collection and creditor’s rights.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to manage a high volume of cases.
  • Proficient in legal research and writing motions and briefs.
