Interim Legal Director
The candidate would (1) share these commitments and articulate and implement them in the legal department; (2) inspire and motivate a diverse collection of professionals to push our vital work forward on behalf of the communities and values that motivate our work; and (3) support leadership and staff in creating the institutional changes need as the organization prepares to enter its second half-century. Responsibilities: Oversee Legal Department’s strategic visioning and planning; Participate in practice group strategic planning meetings, as well as legislative and litigation work planning meetings; Oversee Legal Department’s substantive work, including approving litigation proposals and settlements, and advising on issues that arise in cases and campaigns; Supervise Deputy Legal Directors; Oversee recruitment, hiring, salaries, and promotions within Legal Department; Oversee personnel and performance issues within Legal Department; implement professional and leadership development training; Oversee budgeting and financial matters for Legal Department; Ensure compliance with reporting requirements in connection with 501(c)(3) and 501(C)(4) status; Work with Interim President/CEO to effectuate transformation of workplace culture and climate; Assess the structure of the legal department to ensure the Legal Department maximizes its impact; Participate as representative of the Legal Department on the Senior Leadership Team, along with other department heads; Represent Legal Department in interactions with the Board, including attending Board meetings and providing information and reports; Coordinate legal work with work of other departments to ensure alignment and consistent vision; Act as public spokesperson for particular campaigns, issues and/or litigation matters.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have J.D. Must have 10-15 years of litigation and/or legislative counsel and/or teaching experience with a strong background in constitutional and civil rights cases. Should have experience leading multi-faceted social justice campaigns that combine litigation, lobbying, public policy advocacy, media advocacy, and community organizing and mobilization and a demonstrated record of successfully moving those campaigns forward. Must have senior level management experience in recruiting, training, managing, and motivating a team of diverse, high-performing lawyers and other social justice staff.
