Profile

Archaeologist Duties: The candidate will perform archaeological surveys and evaluations to identify the presence of cultural resources for the installation's Cultural Resource Management. Will perform archaeological monitoring for archaeological sites to avoid and monitor impacts on cultural resources. Review contractor developed technical reports for sufficiency in meeting national cultural resources standards and in accordance with the installations Programmatic Agreement. Assist the installation with reviewing and implementing cultural resource policies that adhere to cultural resource compliance laws. Review project plans and designs to ensure compliance with historic preservation regulations.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: The candidate should have a Bachelor's degree or higher at an accredited college or university that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: 1) History of archeology; 2) Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; 3) Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4) Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; 5) Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work AND six semester hours of related course work in: 1) Geography, geology, or cultural geography; 2) History, historiography, or historical archeology; 3) Environmental studies; 4) Scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or 5) Surveying AND Archeological field school.
OR
Have completed a Bachelor's degree or higher at an accredited college or university in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements above (including archeological field school).
OR
Have a combination of education and experience with College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.
OR
Have four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Candidates with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as part of a larger archeological project.

For GS-05: Candidate who meet the basic requirements described above are fully qualified for GS-05.

For GS-07: The candidate should have completed one full year of graduate level education OR have completed a Bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement OR have 1+ year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional Archaeologist collecting, analyzing and interpreting data by applying principles, theories, concepts, methods, and scientific techniques.

For GS-09: The candidate should have completed a Master's or equivalent graduate degree OR have completed two full years of progressively higher graduate level education leading to a Master's degree OR have obtained an LL.B. or J.D. that is related to the position being filled OR have 1+ year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional Archaeologist assisting in the examination, documentation and preservation of artifacts by applying principles, theories, concepts, methods, and scientific techniques.

For GS-11: The candidate should have completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR have completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree OR have completed an LL.M. degree that is related to the position being filled OR have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional Archaeologist performing preservation and maintaining written, photographic and drawn records and electronic databases.

For GS-12: The candidate must have 1+ year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional Archaeologist excavating, dating and interpreting finds of historical interest to establish the age of an artifact and its origin for archaeological resources.

For GS-13: The candidate must have 1+ year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional Archaeologist planning site surveys and excavations or writing reports, papers and other articles for publication to maintain historic preservation and cultural resources programs.
