Senior Legal Assistant - Criminal The candidate will independently perform a variety of complex legal administrative duties. Drafts, composes, and assembles legal documents. Provides support to attorneys in preparation for hearings, trials, and meetings. Prepares evidence, court documents, notifies witnesses, and coordinates testimonies at hearings and trials; assists in the courtroom. Continuous contact is maintained between law enforcement agencies, Court Administration, Community Corrections, the general public, defense attorneys, defendants, and members of the public relating to criminal matters. Organizes tasks and maintains case files. Ongoing collaboration and cooperation with other counties and agencies within and outside the state of Minnesota. Provides legal administrative assistance and support to attorneys, ability to prioritize. Tracks criminal histories and convictions, aliases of defendants, current active case files, and any other relevant information. Opens, sorts, and reads incoming correspondence; answers letters, as authorized by attorney; reviews hearing notices for accuracy and communicates with Court Administration; responds to calls from the general public; and refers inquiries as necessary. Compiles trial notebooks and organizes case files for use at trial; may attend trials or other court proceedings to assist attorneys when requested; provides feedback to attorney. Attends and participates in meetings. Maintains prosecutor's calendar, files, and fields telephone calls; processes daily court calendar. Searches for and provides driver's license information, criminal history, and any other pertinent information to help the attorney make a well-informed charging decision. Reports criminal history suspense files to supervisor. Develops and maintains numerous data bases; responsible for file retention. Works the hours and/or shifts assigned and begins and ends work on time. Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have an equivalency of an Associate's Degree in a directly related legal field. 4 years of legal experience may substitute for the degree. Experience with MNCIS, MCAPS, and/or previous criminal experience in a County Attorney's Office are highly desirable.
