Product Counsel Responsibilities: Maintain high level of expertise in global privacy and data protection laws, including GDPR and CCPA, including staying current on new developments as they occur to provide forward thinking product and infrastructure roadmap advice. Assist Associate General Counsel, Product & Privacy in efforts to enable policies and compliance, enhance security and privacy by design, assist with security and compliance audits. Draft and update form agreements regarding products and services, and negotiate product, privacy and security related changes to customer contracts. Deeply understand product and data risk issues to be able to hear questions that aren’t asked and translate technical and security concerns into answers containing language understandable by non-technical lawyers to allay customer concerns during negotiations. Review marketing and other communications relating to product. Engage with the security team on application and infrastructure issues to provide legal risk input. Provide product counseling to internal teams, identifying and addressing legal issues early on - at the ideation stage - and shepherding products and features through until end of life, including issues relating to licensing, open source, trademark, patent opportunities, communications, contracting/pricing, etc.. Provide general legal support on a flexible, as-needed basis with respect to other areas of the business. Work with potential vendors to understand data flows to determine privacy and data protection risk and negotiate modifications to vendor agreements to address them. Contribute as a team player to help further the status of the legal department as an effective, respected, and valued resource within the company.
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: Graduate of a top-tier law school. California Bar membership required. 2 years' focused experience in product, privacy and/or IP law or significant experience (including informal) as an engineer or in software coding. 4-7 years relevant legal experience at a top law firm and/or in-house (a combination of both is a plus). General understanding of cloud and software technology, and a strong desire to work on legal issues in these areas; technology academic and/or work background is a plus. Strong knowledge of intellectual property, data privacy and contract law and a strong interest in diving into an evolving field. Ability to prioritize and manage time, and client expectations, in the face of competing demands. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Strong desire to be part of a dynamic in-house legal team supporting the recognized leader in processing big data in the cloud.
