Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance, Inc. (GBLA), a non-profit law firm that provides free civil legal assistance to people living with low income/low opportunity seeks a Staff Attorney to work in its Community Homeless Law Center.
The goal of the Community Homeless Law Center Project is to remove legal barriers to obtaining and maintaining permanent housing. The Project uses a wrap-around approach to address the needs of homeless clients that involves both legal and social services.
Legal services can address health, public benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), domestic violence, Homeless Court, consumer, education, child support, and other matters. In partnership with Flood Ministries, homeless individuals can get assistance with initial SSI/SSDI applications via the SOAR model.
In addition to participating in community outreach events, including legal clinics, and developing relationships with service providers, the Staff Attorney will practice creative problem solving and litigation to address novel issues as well as the following routine items: landlord tenant issues such as eviction, harassment, illegal lockouts and citations.
Compensation: This attorney position is a salaried with position with an annual salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. ($65,856- $74,122).
GBLA offers a generous benefit package, a 37.5-hour workweek, paid sick and vacation leave. 100% employer-paid medical premium for employee (dependent coverage optional though a Sec 125 plan paid by employee) 100% employer-paid premium dental and life insurance for employee and dependents. 100% employer paid long/short term disability for employee.
Employee also has the option to participate in a 403(b) retirement plan, employee only contributions.

These basic legal problems generally involve preventing homelessness, access to health care, and securing financial resources to meet basic necessities of life. Secondly, GBLA tries to help those eligible clients who are able and willing to get out of poverty. In this regard, GBLA’s focus is on those legal needs that address issues of economic and family stability, physical security, and access to high quality education.
