Legal Assistant III
Duties : Provide highly complex legal assistant work under the limited supervision of two to three attorneys in the General Litigation Division by performing legal research and drafting of complex legal documents. Researches and analyzes legal sources; coordinates complex discovery documents for use in legal proceedings. Assists attorneys in preparation for trial including organizing notebooks, exhibits and witnesses; manages attorney’s caseload. Drafts, prepares, reviews, cite checks and edits pleadings, motions, briefs, abstracts, legislative histories, petitions, summary judgments, rules, and other administrative and agency procedures. Participates in coordinating discovery, including the drafting, responding, and calendaring of interrogatories, requests for production, requests for admissions, and other requests for information in accordance with local, state, federal, and agency rules and procedures. Maintains calendar/docket, files, case openings and closings. Participates in managing attorneys’ caseloads including scheduling, prioritizing, investigating, preparing chronologies, fact summaries, and filing. Schedules, attends, assists and prepares attorneys for hearings, trials, agency meetings, appellate arguments, depositions, docket calls, administrative hearings, or committee meetings. Prepares settlement and judgment documents; interviews witnesses and assists with background investigations; organizes documents in complex litigation. Prepares and coordinates service of subpoenas, notices of deposition and other legal documents to witnesses and parties to actions. Coordinates, assembles, and prepares evidence, exhibits, affidavits and other documents for use in legal proceedings. Coordinates all phases of trial preparation, including setting hearings/depositions/meetings, organizing trial notebooks and exhibits and preparing witnesses for trial. Coordinates all phases of appeals and appellate related matters. Researches and analyzes legal sources such as statutes, case law, administrative records, opinions, land titles, abstracts and rules and regulations; prepares memoranda on research findings. Assists attorneys and support staff with case management/reviews mail. Participates in coordinating, assembling and preparing evidence, exhibits, affidavits and other documents for use in legal proceedings. Communicates with state agencies, court personnel, or outside entities. Performs related work as assigned. Maintains relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions. Attends work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule. Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information. Complies with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity.

Qualification and Experience

Qualification : Graduation from high school or equivalent. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; experience in the following (or closely related) fields may be substituted for the required education on a year- for-year basis: legal assistant, legal secretary, or general office experience in a civil litigation environment. 3 years of full-time experience working in the following (or closely related) fields: legal assistant, legal secretary, or general office experience in a civil litigation environment. Knowledge of State and Federal Civil Procedures; office procedures in a legal setting.

Preferred Qualification : Graduation from a course of study for Paralegals (copy of certificate required at time of interview). Paralegal experience in litigation. Legal terminology and principles; electronic discovery. Considerable use of Westlaw, LexisNexis or other legal research tools. Perform legal research; manage an active litigation docket for two or more attorneys. CLA, CP, or RP professional certification.
