Job Overview: A highly respected law firm is seeking a Workers' Compensation Defense Attorney to join its Chicago office. This position involves defending employers in workers' compensation cases, providing legal advice, and managing cases from initial investigation through to resolution. The successful candidate will have strong litigation experience and the ability to navigate complex legal matters with a focus on cost-effective solutions for clients. This role offers the opportunity to work with a dedicated team of professionals while managing a diverse caseload.

Duties:

  • Gather and review medical records and evidence related to workers' compensation claims
  • Conduct depositions of claimants, physicians, and expert witnesses
  • Perform legal research and draft pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents
  • Stay up-to-date with developments in workers' compensation laws
  • Litigate cases before administrative law judges and represent employers at various hearings and proceedings
  • Communicate regularly with claims representatives and provide updates on case status
  • Analyze trends in loss run reports and inform management of any concerns
  • Assist in accident investigations and identify areas of concern for employers
  • Manage workers' compensation costs and negotiate settlements on behalf of clients
  • Attend and participate in claims reviews and other meetings as required
  • Provide reports to management regarding ongoing cases and legal trends

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to the Illinois Bar (admission to other Midwest states is a plus)
  • Proven interest and experience in workers' compensation defense
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws related to workers' compensation and legal practices
  • Strong legal research, writing, and communication skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Outlook (experience with legal software such as Perfect Law is a plus)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Active member of the Illinois Bar (admission in additional Midwest states is preferred)

Skills:

  • Strong litigation skills with an emphasis on workers' compensation law
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management abilities
  • Proficiency in drafting legal documents and conducting legal research
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative legal team
