ProfileParalegal The candidate Conducts legal research as requested by attorneys. Provides litigation support and management of complex cases, specifically, interview potential witnesses, organize and gather information for discovery requests, monitor prosecution files for timeliness. Assists in preparation of training materials for in-service training programs. Provides legal update of recently published decisions and statutes to affected departments. Performs clerical tasks required to complete assignments. Provides office clerical support as directed by District Attorney and/or Office Supervisor. Prepares and composes correspondence, edits materials, and types documentation, such as criminal complaints and summons, from handwritten material and machine transcription. Enters data onto the District Attorney computer system such as referrals, subpoenas, scheduled court appearances and meetings. Maintains files and records, preparing necessary paperwork and opening and closing cases. Assists with case preparation, researching general information for the attorney and following up on projects and deadlines. Maintains and updates department library. Serves as a backup receptionist; answering multi-line telephone; taking messages; greeting, directing, and assisting the public; and making referrals to specific attorneys and/or community resources when appropriate. Prints weekly calendar from the computer and distributes to the attorneys. Maintains and monitors referrals, verifying unresolved referrals with department records. Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works overtime/extra hours as required. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have Associates Degree required with classes in paralegal and legal secretary studies. Should have 5+ years experience as a legal secretary/paralegal in a prosecutor's office. Individual should be skilled in the use of the software currently in use in the office, type 65 WPM @ 95% accuracy is needed. combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities is needed. Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to conform to goals, policies, and procedures of the Department as well as the Work Rules and Terms of Employment is needed. Knowledge of, and ability to use, modern office practices, procedures, and equipment such as computers, calculators, typewriter, telephone, Dictaphone, photocopier, and FAX machine is essential. Knowledge of and demonstrated skill in performing general clerical duties are needed. Knowledge of and skill in using business English, grammar, and spelling is needed. Thorough knowledge of the criminal justice system iser Knowledge of pertinent laws, statutes, regulations, and legal terminology is needed. Knowledge of and ability to use computer software and applications utilized by the department is needed. Ability to effectively communicate in English, verbally and in writing is essential. Ability to prepare for attorney review, various legal documents including deeds, legal memoranda, letters and other correspondence, notices, summons, complaints, subpoenas, etc. is needed.
