VP Legal - Operations Duties: Supports property operations by assessing and providing legal counsel on such topics as lease interpretation, modification, and termination; Fair Housing Act and Americans with Disabilities Act issues; landlord/tenant issues. Provides legal support and guidance to general corporate departments or functions such as utility billing, ancillary income, and resident screening. Collaborates with the Information Technology function and outside legal counsel to maintain the legal requirements of the Electronic Residential Leasing Interface (MERLIN) leasing platform. Facilitates compliance of policy with federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Researches current and emerging issues within the real estate and multi-family housing industry and assesses the implications. Maintains knowledge of legal statutes and case law with implications. Drafts, reviews, and interprets relevant policies in collaboration with subject matter experts across the organization. Prepares and provides legal training for new managers and/or other associates as scheduled and ad hoc. Travels as needed for meetings, events, and/or training. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the needs of the business.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: JD Degree and 10 years of relevant legal experience required. Admission and membership to the State Bar Association of Tennessee or another state in which MAA operates are required. Experience providing legal counsel to support the general business operations function of an organization strongly preferred. Familiarity with legal issues and regulations pertaining to the multifamily housing industry preferred. Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the multi-family housing industry. Knowledge of multidisciplinary business principles and practices to achieve successful outcomes in cross-functional projects and activities. Ability to achieve goals through direct and indirect influence and collaboration. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills applied to complex legal challenges. Professional and effective verbal and written communication skills. Accuracy and attention to detail with qualitative and quantitative data. Computer skills with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint). Ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks and projects, and meet deadlines within a fast-paced environment. Skill and ability to collaborate within a team as well as operate independently. Ability to maintain confidentiality and maintain appropriate discretion.
