Duties: Provides a wide range of legal and regulatory support services to one or more of the underwriting, operations and claims business units in both Long Term Care and Property & Casualty business units. Work assignments supporting Long Term Care operations may include conducting legal research and providing legal advice on matters relating to HIPAA, privacy, rate and form filing compliance, claim handling requirements, policy administration, complaints and market conduct examinations. Assignments supporting Property & Casualty business units may include research and advice on: cancellation/nonrenewal notice requirements; implementation of new law changes; DOI complaints and market conduct examinations; policy administration; and providing training and supporting regulatory and compliance initiatives. Counsels management on matters of legal risk and obligation. Provides research, legal analysis, counsel and guidance on legal questions or issues. Provides opinion and/or prepares position papers on various legal issues and interpretation of contractual provisions. Reviews and/or drafts contracts; may review new products. Monitors legal and regulatory developments; counsels management regarding changes. Prepares and/or reviews documents for financial or securities transactions. May supervise the defense in litigation by outside counsel. May train department staff on appropriate procedures (e.g., privacy, etc). Periodically works with external clients while resolving legal issues. Responds to government agencies. May perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualification and Experience

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree with JD, and admission to the bar of at least one state. 4+ years of claims and/or legal experience with a proven track record of results. Strong knowledge of property & casualty insurance products, theories, principles, practices, regulations and procedures of legal risk and management within an insurance organization. Excellent verbal and written communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Strong negotiation, consultative and facilitation skills with the ability to effectively interact with all internal and external business partners. Ability to exercise independent judgment, and to work with and maintain confidential and sensitive information. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, and senior level skill in managing ambiguous situations and issues. Proven ability to take a proactive long-term view of business goals and objectives in order to achieve strategic business results. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software. Knowledge of long-term care insurance preferred. Knowledge of privacy law preferred.
