Deputy Legal Director
The candidate will develop the vision for the practice area and corresponding strategies. Will set priorities and oversee the implementation of cases in consultation with Legal Department leaders. Create annual departmental work plans, set annual goals, and track and monitor the performance of staff towards achieving goals. Develop and maintain a leadership role within firms, including regular collaboration with colleagues within the Legal Department and in other firms, departments to achieve mutual goals and to further communication and cooperation. Develop and nurture partnerships with external stakeholders, including community members, other civil rights organizations, legislators, policymakers and others. Serve as spokesperson for firms in national and local public forums and meetings.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have a Juris Doctorate degree. Must have 10+ years of experience working on cases and campaigns related to youth, conditions of confinement and criminal justice using integrated advocacy to achieve concrete, measurable results. Should have significant management experience, with a successful track record as a unifying team builder with a collegial, collaborative management style and a demonstrated commitment to the value and power of teams. Must have substantial experience developing, leading, and executing multi-faceted advocacy campaigns. Substantial federal civil litigation experience focused on decarceration, conditions litigation and challenging criminal justice systems is required. Experience with youth systems, conditions reform and/or criminal justice-related policy advocacy is needed.
