The candidate will provide legal administrative support to attorneys with the focus on mental health protective custodies, guardianships and civil commitments. Will interviews parties, draft and review documents for involuntary commitments, emergency detentions, protective placements and guardianship of incompetent adults. Will also be the primary contact on three party petitions/civil commitments and will also assist with the defense of federal inmate cases. Interviews parties and prepares legal documents for civil proceedings regarding mental health guardianships, three party petitions and federal inmate cases. This also includes preparing case and hearing summaries, discovery and medical record summaries and notebooks. Performs legal research using Westlaw and other databases, reviews and studies Wisconsin statutes, federal laws, municipal ordinances, policies and procedures and other laws and regulations. Assists and responds to public record requests, calendars and monitors deadlines in state and federal courts, as well as administrative bodies. Locates and interviews witnesses and assists attorneys at trials and hearings. Diligently organizes, maintains, tracks and searches physical and electronic files and correspondences. Uses electronic filing and docketing systems in various Wisconsin and Federal Courts systems. Performs other duties as requested.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have an Associate’s Degree in paralegal studies or a paralegal certificate from an accredited community or technical college and two (2) years’ experience performing legal/paralegal work. OR in lieu of experience a Bachelor’s Degree in paralegal studies from an accredited College or University will also be considered. Must be a current resident of the State of Wisconsin. Experienced with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word. The ability to work with high volume and variable work demands and deadlines, including a high level of communication and attention to detail. Skilled at organizing and prioritizing time, work, and materials is of extreme importance. Frequent contact with internal and external clients and stakeholders. Understanding and cooperating with multiple departments. A high degree of knowledge in the laws, reading, writing and knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets.
