First Assistant Attorney General The candidate will represent and advise the Water Quality Control Division, the Water Quality Control Commission, and the Radiation Protection Program in the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) in their implementation and administration of state and federal laws designed to protect water quality and to protect against radiation hazards. This position will be prosecuting and defending all civil and criminal actions in which the State has an interest, including on appeal. Defending the laws and the Constitution of the State of Colorado. Protecting consumers from scams and fraudulent activity. Serving as legal advisor to officers of the State of Colorado and defending them from legal challenge. Protecting and preserving Colorado’s natural resources. Advocating for policies that help law enforcement improve community safety. Investigating and prosecuting Medicaid fraud throughout the State. Will manage the Unit, including budget/fiscal review and compliance, assigning and monitoring cases and projects, making hiring decisions and salary recommendations, mentoring and evaluating staff, and reporting to senior management on legal, policy, and personnel matters.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate must be admitted to the Colorado bar or clearly eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar and be in good standing at the time of application. Must have at least 7 years of civil practice and/or in-house counsel. Previous management and supervisory experience is strongly preferred. Natural resource law and policy experience, including federal and state laws regarding water quality, drinking water, radiation protection, or energy law/policy is strongly preferred. Substantial experience with administrative and judicial proceedings, the State Administrative Procedure Act, and litigation are strongly preferred. Strong written and oral communication skills, an ability to develop successful team building strategies, excellent client relations skills and strong leadership. Must successfully pass a thorough criminal background check.
