Immigration Staff Attorney Duties: Provide emergency legal assistance to asylum seekers at a distance, develop pro se resources, and represent ASAP clients at immigration courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and Courts of Appeal. Counseling clients and pro se litigants, as well as legal research and writing. Represent asylum-seeking clients in removal proceedings in immigration court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and Courts of Appeal. Draft briefs, motions, memos, declarations, and other documents in support of casework. Communicate regularly with ASAP’s clients, online community members, and partner organizations. Provide limited pro se assistance to asylum-seekers in removal proceedings who belong to ASAP’s private online community. Provide legal information and referrals to asylum-seekers without representation. Develop pro se written and video resources. Respond to requests for emergency legal assistance. Maintain careful and accurate case management records. Supervise the legal work of paralegals, interns, and volunteers.
Qualification and Experience
Qualifications: Must have a JD Degree and be a member of a Bar association or have an application pending. Spanish fluency strongly preferred. Asylum or immigration law experience strongly preferred. Excellent writing and analytical skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and responsibly. Careful attention to details. Ability to thrive in high-pressure situations. Ability to think creatively, take initiative, and be flexible. Comfort with technology and ability to problem-solve in the face of technical challenges. Commitment to remain in position for at least one year. Deadline: September 1, 2018
