Assistant General Counsel
The candidate will play a critical role in advancing the firm’s mission by developing and managing impact litigation and engaging in integrated advocacy. Will serve as litigation counsel advising strategy before state and federal courts, including the United States Courts of Appeals and the Supreme Court of the United States. Responsible for developing and overseeing lawsuits, filing amicus briefs and otherwise providing support or becoming actively involved in litigation of general importance to physicians and their patients. Potential suits include topics such as access to care and constitutional rights, patient autonomy, reproductive health rights, mental health rights, LGBTQ rights, health equity, gun violence, medical liability and tort reform, medical staff privileges, peer review and scope-of-practice matters, and Medicare, Medicaid and private payer issues, among others. Proactively identify, develop and evaluate litigation for possible firm involvement to further firm’s mission and strategic goals. Conduct factual and legal analysis and devise or employ relevant theories and materials to achieve strategic goals. Manage an active appellate caseload and exercise independent judgment on complex issues, including legal research and preparation of preparation of pleadings and/or amicus briefs. Manage outside counsel who handle firm lawsuits or amicus briefs filed on behalf of the firm.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have JD degree from an accredited leading law school. Must be licensed to practice law in Illinois. Must have 7+ years of experience in the law field, with 5+ years of appellate or motion practice litigation experience, including preparation of briefs on healthcare related matters, constitutional questions and other complex issues. Significant breadth and depth in transactional matters is a plus. Experience in effectively collaborating in cross-functional business and legal teams to address and resolve legal issues to achieve the desired business units’ outcome is essential. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to persuade and communicate confidently is needed. Excellent research skills are essential.
