Deborah T. Poritz Legal Fellowship Program, Summer 2018 The students placed in this summer program gain experience in a wide variety of legal issues affecting the poor. Activities typically include client interviewing, legal and factual research, drafting legal documents, administrative agency appearances and, for students who have completed two years of law school, court appearances and more in-depth case involvement. A regional program fellow will be given responsibility for client cases, research, drafting pleadings and, for rising 3rd year students, usually some court or administrative agency appearances. These placements focus on direct client representation and legal research. Jersey Battered Woman's Services Fellows may have the opportunity to observe in Court, but are unlikely to participate in direct legal representation. Community Health Law Project Fellows will be involved in legal research and writing, as well as direct client contact and representation. First and second year law students will be considered. Should have demonstrated commitment to helping the disadvantaged through prior work, extracurricular activities during school and volunteer efforts, and evidence of strong commitment to a public interest career. Grades, honors and personal achievements are also important.
