Job Overview:
A prominent law firm is seeking a skilled Construction Law Associate Attorney to join their team in Cerritos, CA. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a legal professional with experience in construction contract claims, litigation, and arbitration. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in handling complex construction-related legal matters, including contract disputes, mechanics’ liens, and public contract laws.

Duties:

  • Handle construction contract claims for both public and private sectors, focusing on claims such as contract extras, delay damages, and impact damages.
  • Assist in arbitration and trial preparation, with hands-on participation in arbitration proceedings or trials.
  • Draft motions, deposition summaries, and correspondence regarding construction litigation matters.
  • Manage discovery plans, including creating, executing, and responding to written discovery.
  • Engage in depositions for both percipient and expert witnesses, and handle law and motion matters related to construction disputes.
  • Interface directly with clients, providing legal guidance and strategic advice on construction litigation issues.
  • Demonstrate a proactive approach, taking ownership of legal matters and formulating strategies for resolution.
  • Collaborate with senior attorneys, offering legal insight and support throughout the litigation process.

Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of experience in handling construction contract claims (excluding construction defect experience).
  • Exposure to and experience with arbitration proceedings, including preparation and participation.
  • In-depth knowledge of mechanic’s lien law, stop notices, bid protests, public contract law, prompt payment laws, and payment/performance bonds.
  • Understanding of alternative project delivery methods.
  • Practical experience in handling construction claims, including delay, impact, and liquidated damage issues.
  • Proficiency in preparing and responding to written discovery.
  • Strong deposition experience with both percipient and expert witnesses.
  • Ability to effectively manage and execute discovery plans.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to draft legal motions, deposition summaries, and other litigation documents.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in the state of California.

Skills:

  • Strong legal research and writing abilities.
  • Detail-oriented and organized.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
