Managing Attorney Duties: Responsible for day-to-day operations of the office and managing a department of legal staff and attorneys who are responsible for providing legal representation and defense counsel for insureds before courts, arbitration panels, or other bodies. Consults on significant defense files and strategizes on resolution of those files and manages assigned staff and/or coaches and mentors junior members of the team. Responsible for the day-to-day management of the Staff Counsel operations including structure, staff, and workloads. Defines and implements operating principals of interaction with insureds and best practices in the defense of insured files. Assists other staff counsel members with strategy, work-up and preparation of significant property and casualty files for trial. Providing advice and counsel to insureds on the defense and resolution of third party defense claims. Consults on significant defense files with direct reports. Strategizes on resolution of those files and assists in preparing significant matters for trial. May try cases to verdict when necessary. Interfaces and provides counsel to other Claimsâ€™ staff as cases develop through trial or resolution. Provides consultation and advice to Claims Senior Management on the proper resolution of defense files litigated on behalf of insureds. Responsible for strategic and tactical input on budgetary and fiscal operations. Manages technical development of staff including: goal setting, skill assessment, staff selection/role alignment, feedback and/or completion of performance appraisals, development, and building of technical skills. Responsible for overall communication of goals and priorities. Anticipates and meets all customer needs (internal and external).
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: JD Degree required. 10+ years of experience litigating property and casualty claims; 5+ years in a staff counsel operation. 5-7 yearsâ€™ experience managing other attorneys, preferred. Substantial experience with research, discovery depositions, mediations and first chair trial experience required. Current license to practice law in local jurisdictions. Must have the ability to diagnose, analyze and solve complex problems. Must have superior critical thinking, decision making, organizational and presentation skills. Must be a proven self-starter with strong multi-tasking and relationship management skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary, especially regarding negotiation. Must have the ability to interact with customers. Requires the ability to maintain confidential information. Exceptional management skills, including informal mentoring and formal development of staff. Demonstrated proficiency with computer software including Microsoft Office.
