Assistant Corporation Counsel Duties: Handles appeals originating from virtually all of the Law Departmentâ€™s litigating divisions and prepares amicus briefs in cases implicating the Cityâ€™s interests. Appear before federal and state appellate courts and are responsible for briefing and arguing appeals in an array of casesâ€”from routine litigation arising out of the governance of a municipality with 8.5 million residents to complex appeals involving cutting-edge legal questions and critical public policy issues. Engage in high-caliber appellate practice and contribute to legal developments impacting the Cityâ€™s government and its residents. Working independently and collaboratively with supervisors, trial attorneys, client agencies, and executive staff, will brief and argue a significant number of appeals every year.
Qualification and Experience
Requirements: Must also have graduated from an ABA-accredited law school and be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar, or be in the process of being admitted. Excellent writing, research, and analytical skills are a must. Prior appellate experienceâ€”from practice or through an appellate clerkshipâ€”is preferred.
