Legal Assistant - E-Discovery The candidate will be responsible for: Representing the City and its officials and employees in all litigation, including tort, commercial, employment, civil rights, and code enforcement matters; Negotiating, drafting, and approving City contracts for commercial, real estate, and finance transactions; Collecting unpaid taxes, fines, and other debts owed to the City; Advising the City on compliance with regulatory law, including environmental, transportation, and public utility matters; Representing the City in social services matters, including child welfare and health matters; and Analyzing and drafting legislation for introduction in City Council. Work with the attorneys on various projects as assigned providing assistance with legal matters. Schedule and facilitate interviews with clients, witnesses, and other pertinent individuals to help determine facts and gather evidence to help lawyers build their case. Assist legal counsel with case preparation by researching legal precedent, briefs, laws, and statutes, investigating facts, and coordinating e-discovery and document production in litigation. Draft documents such as subpoenas, deeds, and complaints and answers are typed by the legal assistant and prepared for mailing to the court or another recipient. Attorneys spend a good part of their workday meeting with clients and in the court room. Screen incoming calls and determine whether they can assist the caller before transferring them to the attorney or their voicemail. Legal assistants keep office files (including pleadings and correspondence) current and organized so that attorneys or other office staff can easily access them. Must possess a bachelor’s degree or paralegal certificate and/or experience as an administrative assistant. Knowledge of City procedures is a plus. Should have excellent time management skills. Excellent written and oral communication required. Must have experience with Word (including Tables of Contents and Authorities), Excel (including formulas) and Adobe Acrobat (including bates stamping and redaction). Should have experience with one or more e-discovery platforms such as Relativity or Axcelerate (including familiarity with boolean searching, file types, and metadata fields). Knowledge of legal concepts such as attorney-client privilege and relevance required.
