Staff Attorney The candidate will do legal representation of program participants in child custody, child support, spousal support, housing, public benefits, divorce, victims compensation, immigration law, and, when possible, other petitions related to civil representation. Representation of program participants in petitioning/filing for protection or restraining order; Representation may include to, interviews, filings, court appearances, trials, and all necessary subsequent litigation such as contempt petitions and appeals. Will represent and advocate for petitioners in civil and criminal contempt cases. Refer program participants to community-based services as needed. Coordinate with DVSC and VRC counselor/advocates the advocacy and crisis intervention services to meet the legal and victim related needs of the program participant. Provide consultation to Legal Advocates, and other DVSC/VRC staff. Assist in policy development and program evaluation planning and implementation for the Civil Legal Representation Project. Assist in the relations with Domestic Relations Service and the Department of Public Welfare – TANF program. Build and maintain strong working relationship with advocates working collaboratively to holistically serve program participants. Participate in advocacy activities on a local, state and national level, specifically, but not limited to committees/networks sponsored by the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Conduct ongoing systems advocacy to improve the response to victims in all relevant systems including the community, law enforcement, courts, law profession, and social service organizations. Litigate in precedent-setting cases at the trial level and on appeal, including developing litigation strategy, performing legal research, and drafting briefs. Maintain appropriate files, records and reports according to legal standards and as required by funding sources. Establish/maintain partnerships with North Penn Legal Services and local attorneys through the Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network, county bar associations, and law schools to generate a network of pro bono attorneys to represent victims of domestic violence.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have Law degree from an accredited law school and license to practice law in Pennsylvania. Must have 1+ year of litigation and family law practice in a public interest law firm or similar setting preferred. Demonstrated expertise in providing legal assistance to domestic violence victims is preferred. Knowledge of laws applicable to domestic violence, stalking and dating violence is essential. Excellent writing and negotiating skill is essential. Should be Computer literate.
