Director of Litigation The candidate manages the litigation team of approximately eleven attorneys and four investigators, and is responsible for:Management of the litigation team, specifically: Supervise all litigation either directly or through litigation supervisors. Work with the attorneys to ensure that legal arguments are consistent across cases. Manage resources effectively. Staff cases balancing organizational needs and individual attorney skill development and experience. Work closely with Executive Director on litigation strategy and lead processes to develop litigation strategy in collaboration with attorneys and other staff. Work with other director-level managers and leads of functions to ensure that litigation is well coordinated with communications, policy, community engagement, and operations teams. Work to ensure the accountability of litigation strategy to local community, directly impacted individuals, and broader movement goals. Should be an outstanding and experienced attorney, interpersonally and culturally competent and able to work well in a collaborative environment. Should have outstanding legal work, as established by many of the following criteria: Lead counsel in impact civil rights or civil liberties litigation; Extensive experience conducting and supervising discovery and brief writing; Demonstrated trial and appellate advocacy experience, including argument before the U.S. Court of Appeals and/or state Supreme Court; Ability to communicate effectively in multiple written forms and oral advocacy contexts; Proven ability to develop and implement long-term legal strategies for advancing civil liberties and civil rights; Proven ability to develop creative litigation strategy in response to setbacks and/or inhospitable courts; Consistently sound judgment in advising clients and plotting strategy; and Impeccable ethical standards and integrity. J.D. degree and a member in good standing of the bar of a U.S. state.
