Senior Counsel, Litigation and Compliance The candidate will approach all aspects of litigation, including discovery, motion practice, witness preparation, and trial and appellate strategies. Will Analyze pre-litigation, litigation and compliance matters to effectively participate in decisions related to resolution strategy and demonstrate an ability to understand, interpret, and apply current law and regulations to firmâ€™s current and prospective products and services. Efficient management of outside counsel, including tactical guidance, staffing, case management, budgeting, and alignment with firmâ€™s broader legal strategy. Provide guidance to management on litigation, pre-litigation and compliance matters. Provide sound legal advice cross-functionally to other teams such as Claims, Vessel Operations and Risk Management. Maintain effective communication with insurance carriers and other third parties. Direct the work of outside counsel in routine and complex litigation with minimal supervision. Counsel clients in all areas of the business and at all levels of management on legal issues, including creative approaches to dispute resolution. Identify complex legal issues related to assigned matter; develop alternative solutions. Represent firm externally to customers, suppliers, competitors or government agencies; resolve legal issues using negotiation skills and legal expertise. Work with clients and lawyers in other areas to resolve complex legal issues on cross-functional projects. Coach and direct assigned support staff in their responsibilities. Represent firm in asbestos workerâ€™s compensation cases.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate should have JD degree from a top law school. Admitted to the California Bar and in good standing is needed. Should have 5-10 years of experience in litigation strategy and management, including mediation and arbitration. Previous in-house experience is a plus as is previous experience with maritime-specific issues, including customs, personal injury and bill of lading issues is needed. Experience in antitrust and/or government proceedings is desirable. Experience directly handling and conducting dispute matters is needed.
