Staff Attorney, Administrative Law Duties: Oversee work that focuses on improving federal administration of laws that affect farmed animals. Identify opportunities for petitions, lawsuits, and other actions against federal government agencies to advocate improved administration of protections for farmed animals. Utilize FOIA and other methods to obtain public records relating to federal administration of laws that affect farmed animals. Maintain database of enforcement data collected. Prepare petitions, legal complaints, rulemaking comments, and testimony for various state government farmed animal initiatives. Cultivate relationships with congressional offices and relevant agency employees. Develop and maintain close working relationships with attorneys in private practice and other animal protection organizations. Work with MFA support staff to mobilize members, supporters, and the media to promote improved agency administration of federal laws. Consult and assist the Canadian team on regulatory and policy issues in Canada. Oversee legal interns and fellows. Follow all human resource and operational procedures. Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Qualification and Experience

Requirements: JD Degree from a U.S.-accredited law school. 5–7 years’ experience practicing law, with experience in administrative law (e.g., FOIA, rulemaking, and suing agencies). Demonstrated ability to create and deliver presentations, address and overcome problems, and negotiate with third parties. Strongly preferred ability to conduct press conferences and interviews with media. Proven exceptional organizational and writing skills. Willingness to travel at least quarterly for meetings, conferences, and retreats. Ability to work well in a team setting. Outstanding interpersonal skills. Professional appearance and adherence to a vegan lifestyle. Commitment to the objectives of the organization.
