Counsel II The candidate will serve as Treatment Center staff attorney and handle an active Superior Court trial practice involving discharge petitions under G.L. c. 123A, § 9, litigation of 42 U.S.C. § 1983 civil rights actions in the state and federal courts, appeals in G.L. c. 123A, § 9 and civil rights cases, and in-house duties. Will provide legal advice as in-house counsel to employees, including the interpretation of applicable laws, regulations and case decisions impacting Department. Performs other duties as assigned. Significant legal research and writing experience at the trial and appellate levels and with criminal justice issues is strongly preferred. Litigation duties of this position include travel to state correctional facilities and state and federal courts located throughout the Commonwealth.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have a J.D. degree, admission to the Massachusetts Bar and 3+ years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in the practice of law. Membership in the Massachusetts Federal District Court and First Circuit Bars preferred. Should preferably also have an excellent academic background, and 2+ years of litigation experience. Experience in criminal justice issues is strongly preferred.
