7 CARES Attorney Fellow
The Fellow will serve a full-time, temporary position through November 30, 2020 to address issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Will address problems resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, including loss of employment, unemployment insurance claims, other claims for public benefits including SNAP, TANF, and medical assistance; loss of housing through eviction or foreclosure and other housing-related matters including utility termination and access to rental assistance; advanced directive preparation, and family law issues related to the pandemic. Will also support special projects including eviction prevention projects in Bucks and Montgomery counties and a Mobile Home Tax Assessment project in Chester County. May also be expected to conduct home visits, community outreach and education, and must have the capacity to work remotely. Interview clients, assist in determining eligibility for services, and ascertain and investigate facts. Conduct legal research and interpret statutes, case law, regulations, and other sources of law. Provide advice and counsel to clients. Prepare legal documents, including briefs, pleadings, motions, notices, correspondence, memoranda, discovery and documents responsive to discovery requests, and advanced directives. Develop strategy and arguments for presentation of cases and assist in preparation of witnesses for hearings and trials. Represent clients at hearings, in trial and appellate courts, and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies. Review decisions and consult with management team to determine the merit of potential appeals. Collaborate with external professional and community organizations relevant to casework. Conduct clinics, community education, and workshops. Become engaged in team efforts to achieve office and program goals, including participation in program-wide affinity groups and task forces. Develop knowledge of community referral resources and assessing community and client needs. Enhance skills and substantive knowledge through training, CLE, and other educational opportunities. Abide by all applicable professional standards of ethics and practice. Complete required administrative tasks including entering of notes and timekeeping in LASP case management software, and maintaining of physical files. Ensure that requirements of grants and contracts which may provide funding for the position are met, and assisting with grant reports. Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned. Should have license to practice law in Pennsylvania or admitted in another jurisdiction and eligible for admission to Pennsylvania. Must have 0-5 years of experience as a lawyer with demonstrated proficiency in word processing, Outlook products, case management software, and online legal research tools. Passionate commitment to public interest law and serving low-income individuals and vulnerable populations is needed. Must have the ability to work remotely and have reliable transportation for outreach assignments. Spanish language proficiency is desirable.
