Legal Program Director, Criminal Justice Reform The candidate reporting to President, will lead a team of talented attorneys and paralegals focused on bold measures to reform criminal justice processes in Texas, including challenging inhumane prison conditions — including the misuse of solitary confinement — racially biased policing methods, and inequitable pre-­?trial processes that drive the over-­?incarceration of poor Texans. The Director’s primary work includes supervising and mentoring attorneys as they develop complex, impact litigation; working in coalition with grassroots organizations and other legal advocates; pushing strategic communication and advocacy campaigns to advance criminal justice reform in Texas; collaboratively setting and implementing a compelling vision for the Criminal Justice Reform Program; and, as a member of company’s Leadership Team, helping to advance internal goals of the organization. Will, first and foremost, be an inclusive, passionate leader committed to combatting inequitable policies and mass incarceration in Texas. She/he/they will be an experienced litigator with the proven ability to develop and lead successful complex litigation. Will have a deep respect for community-­?centered lawyering and experience working in coalition with community-­?based organizations. The new Legal Director of Criminal Justice Reform Program will lead a highly talented team committed to ending mass incarceration. This work requires a leader than can identify the underlying causes and wide-­?spread effects of mass incarceration in the state and lead in the following areas: Partner with senior leadership to set and execute the vision and strategy for the criminal justice reform program at company. The new Director will be a thought leader, ready to apply their expertise in leading complex criminal justice reform legal work to maintain, advance and expand the goals of ending mass incarceration, policing disparities, the unlawful intermingling of police officers and immigration agents and other systemic inequities in Texas. They will work closely with the President to craft a vision for Criminal Justice Reform that balances impact litigation, advocacy, and community engagement, and they will build on the program’s recent successes, overseeing the research and development of new priorities and strategies. She/he/they will deepen partnerships with grassroots partners, peer organizations, policymakers and community members to ensure that the work of the program team is informed by impacted communities and has widespread impact. Manage a talented team of attorneys and professional staff. Will lead a talented group of attorneys and other legal professionals committed to dismantling mass incarceration through targeted reforms in the criminal justice system. In this capacity, she/he/they will supervise the case development and investigations of concerns raised by community members and partner organizations. This includes identifying innovative strategies to build cases, driving advocacy campaigns, forming and maintaining strategic partnerships, overseeing litigation, and providing 3guidance and support to attorneys and paralegals. The new Director will also foster a culture of boldness, trust, transparency, mentorship, and equity within the team and across company. Collaborate with other Legal Directors on program strategy. company’s success relies on deeply collaborative relationships among Directors and staff. The new Director will explore opportunities to build cases and campaigns that intersect with company’s other legal program areas, enabling integration and alignment across the team and increasing learning from each other and from grassroots partners. Also support the work of colleagues in communications and development as they build campaigns to drive visibility, community support, and funding to increase impact. Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have admission to the Texas Bar or ability to immediately waive into Texas Bar. Should have exceptional litigation skills and 5 years of federal or state court civil litigation experience, including complex case development. Must have 3-5 years of demonstrated success inspiring and leading highly talented and diverse teams, preferably of legal staff; proven success hiring, training, conducting performance evaluations and mentoring teams. Should have deep personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion; proven success in engaging with and working in partnership with diverse communities; lived experience that informs an authentic understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable communities and a sophisticated understanding of the historical nature of structural power differences with a lens into how that impacts social justice efforts today. Demonstrated knowledge of criminal justice reform is a plus. Must have experience analyzing public policy issues, including an ability to synthesize and summarize large amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue. Should have excellent communication skills, including research and writing, interpersonal and public communication skills, and an ability to translate vision and strategy into external messaging. Must have ecellent interpersonal skills, including maturity, keen judgment, the ability to facilitate
challenging conversations and quickly read interpersonal dynamics, and the ability to work with people from a wide array of backgrounds and perspectives and across projects. Spanish fluency is a plus.
