Profile

Supervising Attorney The candidate will provide meaningful and regular supervision of all work done by the Transition Age Youth team. Will advocate for systemic change related to disconnected youth by representing organization in key county and statewide workgroups, review and draft policies through legislative and local administrative processes, and build coalitions with other community partners. Identify, research, and develop legal issues appropriate for impact litigation related to disconnected youth. Recruit, train and provide technical support to pro bono attorneys and volunteers. Provide outreach, training, and technical assistance to community-based partner organizations serving youth. Work with Directing Attorney to oversee fulfillment of grant deliverables and to assist in the drafting of grant proposals and reports.

Qualification and Experience

The candidate should have a J.D. degree and be a member in good standing of the California Bar. Must have 5+ years of relevant experience. Should have experience working with or managing a multi-disciplinary team and in leading or managing team projects. Knowledge of the legal issues affecting youth populations, especially education law, is required. Should have experience and/or desire to work with youth, including high-school aged youth and/or foster youth using trauma-informed legal advocacy: empathy, responsive listening, restraint from judgment, and demonstration of authentic care and concern. Experience in working with large systems such as child welfare agencies or school districts in developing policies and procedures and engaging in systemic reform efforts is required. Commitment to aid in the professional development and success of junior staff is needed. Commitment to economic and racial justice is essential. Experience and/or desire to work with low-income, racially diverse clients is a must.
